Club director expects player linked with Spurs and Liverpool to be sold this summer

PSV Eindhoven director Earnest Stewart has admitted that he expects rumoured Tottenham target Johan Bakayoko to leave the club at the end of the current season.

Bakayoko first caught the eye after establishing himself as a regular in PSV’s starting eleven last season and Spurs reportedly failed with a late approach for the winger in the dying stages of last summer’s transfer window (Fabrizio Romano).

The 20-year-old has hit even greater heights at the Phillips Stadium this campaign, with six goals and 13 assists across all competitions so far in 2023-24 (Transfermarkt).

Just ahead of the January window, multiple outlets backed Tottenham to reignite their interest in the Belgian international (Sky Sports and Football Insider) but the Lilywhites seemingly did not make an approach for the player last month.

Spurs are not the only Premier League side thought to be eyeing the winger, with 90 min reporting back in December that Liverpool were also ready to challenge Ange Postecoglou’s men for the youngster’s signature.

Should Tottenham move for Johan Bakayoko?

Stewart has now handed the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool a boost by stating that he does not expect Bakayoko to be at Eindhoven next season.

When asked if the winger will stay beyond the summer, the PSV director told NOS: “No, I don’t think so. What Johan is doing at his age is fantastic. He has played thirty top matches before the winter break, including international matches with Belgium.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am always sceptical about the idea of signing attacking players from the Eredivisie, with wingers and strikers who come from Dutch football often finding life very difficult against more pacy and powerful defenders in the Premier League.

However, Tottenham will perhaps look at Bakayoko’s impressive displays in the Champions League this season as evidence that the youngster is good enough to succeed at the highest level.
