Club director ‘knows’ Spurs player would ‘love’ to join his club – Claims journalist

Dutch journalist Johan Inan has claimed Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars believes Steven Bergwijn would love to join the club from Tottenham.

The 24-year-old has been rumoured to be heading towards the exit at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this month having failed to break into Antonio Conte’s line-up.

Reports have suggested the Italian is willing to part ways with up to six Spurs players as part of the club’s rebuild this month, with the Netherlands international said to be among those up for sale.

Spurs have reportedly already received an opening bid for Bergwijn, with Eredivisie giants Ajax said to have submitted a £15 million offer for the winger.

However, it has been claimed that Spurs are hoping to receive an amount closer to the £27 million fee paid to PSV two years ago.

But Inan claims Bergwijn’s move to Ajax is still very much on, with the club’s chief Overmars in firm belief the Spurs man wants to make the move to the Johan Cruijff Arena.

He said (via Voetbal Primeur): “Ajax has made a first offer. Some amounts have been mentioned. I will not mention that amount, because I do not know whether it is €18 million (£15m). I have signals that Tottenham want a little more.

“[Overmars] knows that Steven Bergwijn would love to go to Ajax, otherwise he would not take these steps.

“I don’t think the negotiations will last very long. If Overmars can sign Bergwijn faster by offering half a million extra, then he will.

“Suppose it is completed in the course of this week or early next week, then Bergwijn can make his debut against PSV.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The transfer for Bergwijn has been one of the club’s most disappointing in recent seasons – especially considering how well he performed for PSV before the move. It is likely Spurs won’t lose out too much from the move which is a bonus, but he is definitely another case of ‘what if?’ At the club.
