‘Coach’s graveyard’ – 44-year-old warned to stay away from Tottenham job

Dutch football analyst Rene van der Gijp has warned Arne Slot against taking the Tottenham job, describing the North London club as ‘a coach’s graveyard’.

Over the past few days, multiple sources have claimed that Tottenham have now stepped up their interest in Arne Slot.

This was first suggested by The Telegraph, who claimed on Tuesday that the Lilywhites hierarchy are keen to speak to the Dutchman, adding that it is now becoming ‘increasingly clear’ that he is under ‘serious consideration’ to replace Antonio Conte.

This information was also backed up by Sky Sports in their transfer centre live blog (19 May, 11 am), where it was suggested that with Tottenham now initiating contact with Slot, Feyenoord are becoming increasingly worried that their head coach could walk away at the end of the season.

However, Van der Gijp believes that the Feyenoord boss would be making a mistake by swapping De Kuip for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the Premier League side are not in a position to sign the best players.

He told Feyenoord Pings: “You’re going to make an awful lot of money, but it’s still a club where you don’t get the best players.

“They have exceptional players with Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, but if they leave, you don’t pick up a Kane anymore. They won’t go there. It is a coach’s graveyard over there.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not see Slot turning down Tottenham if they offer him the job as the 44-year-old would realise that he might not get another chance to manage a top Premier League club.

However, it is far from clear at the moment if the Dutchman is indeed Spurs’ top target, with the Lilywhites still seemingly in the process of speaking to various contenders for the role.
