‘Complicated operation’ – Villarreal CEO comments on Lo Celso situation

Villarreal CEO Roig Negueroles has admitted the club is interested in signing Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso but talks about a transfer are complicated.

Lo Celso, 26, made a big impression at the Spanish club after leaving Spurs on loan in the January transfer window, having struggled to break into Antonio Conte’s side.

Making just nine appearances in the Premier League last term, the Argentina international’s future in North London is uncertain having been included on a list of players available for transfer this summer (Evening Standard).

Villarreal, who reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, are said to be interested in bringing Lo Celso back to the Estadio de la Ceramica next season on a permanent deal (El Periodic Mediterraneo).

Club chief Negueroles has now admitted the Yellow Submarine are keen to continue their journey with Lo Celso, but a deal with Tottenham is proving complicated.

Negueroles told Radio Vila-real: “Lo Celso is a player who has been happy here and has made us happy, so we would like to continue together. But he is a Tottenham player and it is a very complicated operation.”

Lo Celso arrived at Tottenham from Real Betis in 2019 where he has struggled to make an impact on English football despite his performances in Spain.

He has made 84 appearances for the club since the move, while his current deal is due to expire in 2025 (Transfermarkt).

Tottenham will be looking to move Lo Celso on this summer given he is unlikely to feature in Conte’s plans for next season.

His spell with Villarreal was positive and should hopefully help the parties involved find some kind of agreement to get a permanent deal over the line.
