Confirmed Line Up: Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa

Mauricio Pochettino has named his starting eleven for the first Premier League match of the new season against Aston Villa this evening.

This is the sixth time Tottenham are playing their opening game of a Premier League season against a promoted side. They’ve won four of the previous five, with their only defeat coming in 2007-08 against Sunderland.

The Spurs boss has handed a top-flight debut to club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele who takes his place in the heart of midfield.

As expected, Dele Alli, Ben Davies, and Ryan Sessegnon miss out, while Juan Foyth and Heung-min Son both serve the second match of a three-game suspension.

Spurs will be looking to kick off the campaign with a win. They have lost 13 of their 29 games in all competitions so far in 2019, more than any other current Premier League side (W14 D2). They last suffered more defeats in a single calendar year in 2014 (16).

This is who starts for Spurs this evening against Dean Smith’s side:

Tottenham: Lloris (C), Walker-Peters, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Rose, Winks, Sissoko, Ndombele, Lamela, Lucas, Kane.

Subs: Gazzaniga, Aurier, Dier, Skipp, Wanyama, Eriksen, Nkoudou

Aston Villa: Heaton, Elmohamady, Engels, Mings, Taylor, Hourihane, McGinn, Grealish, Trezeguet, Wesley, El Ghazi.

Subs: Steer, Konsa, Targett, Luiz, Lansbury, Jota, Kodjia
