Conflicting reports emerge around Spurs’ pursuit of Conor Gallagher

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed Tottenham Hotspur are in negotiations with Chelsea for Conor Gallagher, but some doubts have been cast on that matter since with other reports suggesting the original claims were ‘wide of the mark’.

While Tottenham are believed to be prioritising a move for a central defender and a winger in the January transfer window, it is no secret that Ange Postecoglou is keen to add a new central midfielder to his squad.

With Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr heading off to the African Cup of Nations, and Rodrigo Bentancur still injured, Postecoglou is left with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp to fill his central midfield roles in January.

Spurs were circling Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher in the summer, but were unable to find common ground with the Blues to secure a transfer. However, the Lilywhites are once again being linked with a move for the Chelsea academy graduate (talkSPORT).

Are Spurs signing Conor Gallagher or not?

Yesterday saw big developments in the reporting on the situation, but it is still unclear how firm Tottenham’s pursuit of the England international is.

That’s because Gianluca Di Marzio broke the news that Spurs and Chelsea were looking for an “agreement” worth around £40m for Gallagher, with “negotiations underway.”

However, later that day, a report from the Evening Standard claimed Di Marzio’s comments about the two clubs “opening talks” were “wide of the mark.” Interestingly, the Standard also stated that the price Spurs were looking at was closer to £35m.

If this move happens, I will be incredibly shocked. I just cannot see Chelsea letting Gallagher go, at least not to Spurs, and even then, I don’t think the player himself would make the switch across London. Still, it would be a very satisfying transfer if we could pull it off.
