Conte claims Harry Kane ‘has to take on bigger responsibility’ at Tottenham

Antonio Conte has admitted that he is excited about working closely with Harry Kane, claiming the striker would take up more ‘responsibility’ in his system.

Conte has worked with some top strikers over the course of his career and has managed to bring the best out of many of them.

Most recently, Romelu Lukaku was transformed at Inter Milan under the Italian’s guidance following a difficult spell at Manchester United. The Belgian international credited the 52-year-old with helping improve his physical attributes and his understanding of the game.

Spurs fans will be hoping that the same happens with Kane, who has struggled for form at club level so far this season.

Conte has admitted that he enjoys working with strikers and building teams to get the best out of his number nine.

When asked about the England captain, the Tottenham boss told Football.London: “Usually I like to work with the strikers, first of all, and I usually every season my striker scores many many goals.

“This is important to score goals, but it’s very important in my idea of football that the number nine is a point of reference in terms of the way you want to prepare during the week.

“I’m very happy to be [Harry’s] coach and for sure we can do important things with him because Harry is one player but then all players have to work well.

“If all the players work well it means that we are going for improvement and that we are going to try to fight for something important in the future.

“Harry is an important player but don’t forget that we win with a team, with the whole squad and we lose with the whole squad and the whole team – and he has to take on bigger responsibility.”

Conte said during his time as Chelsea boss in 2017 that if there was one striker in the world he could sign, it would be Kane.

The Italian has now reiterated the sentiment, explaining that any coach in the world would love to work with a striker of the 28-year-old’s quality.

When asked about his past comments about Kane, Conte said: “I think every manager, every single manager wants to sign Harry Kane because we are talking about a top, top player and now I’m enjoying that I am in the right place to enjoy Harry.

“He is a striker of Tottenham and now I have the possibility to work with him and to exploit his characteristics, his quality and his potential.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am excited to see what Conte does to get the best out of Kane. While the Tottenham man is arguably the best number nine in the world, one can argue that he is not a typical Conte striker.

He is not blessed with amazing physical attributes and is not the best in one vs one situations. So the Italian will want to make sure that Kane has plenty of runners beside him and gets the right kind of service.
