Conte comments on the progress he is seeing from Cristian Romero after injury

Antonio Conte has revealed that he is delighted with the progress Cristian Romero is making, admitting the centre-back is an important part of his plans.

Romero was Conte’s first choice in the right centre-back role in the Italian’s first couple of weeks in charge at the club.

However, Tottenham’s summer signing has been sidelined since picking up a hamstring injury during the international break in November.

The defender took to social media two weeks ago to reveal that he is now back training with his teammates.

Conte stated last week that he expects the former Atalanta man to be back in action after the international break (Alasdair Gold).

The 23-year-old will continue his rehabilitation at Hotspur Way through the international break after being left out of Argentina’s squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia.

Conte has now praised the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga for stepping up in Romero’s absence and admitted that the Argentine is now ‘almost 100 per cent’ fit.

The Spurs boss told Football.London: “Cristian Romero, I am pleased because I am seeing now he is almost 100 per cent fit and he is very very close to coming back and for sure after the international break he is available to play and help us.

“We are talking about another important player for us. He missed two months, despite this I see in a positive way, I have seen the improvement of players like Ben Davies, Davinson Sanchez, Japhet Tanganga and I think we exploited this period without Cristian and saw the improvement of these three central defenders.

“I want to see the positive way about the injury of Cristian but now he is ready and after the international break he will play again and this is good news for us.”

Spurs Web Opinion

When Conte first arrived at the club, I suspected that Davinson Sanchez days at Spurs would be numbered.

However, I have been mightily impressed with the way the Colombian has stepped up in the 23-year-old’s absence.

While I expect Romero, Dier and Davies to remain Conte’s first-choice back three, Sanchez has shown that he has a future at Spurs.
