Conte gives his assessment of Dele, Winks and Sessegnon vs Liverpool

Antonio Conte praised the performances of Harry Winks and Dele Alli following Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool this evening in the Premier League.

The two English midfielders have found starts in the league hard to come by over the last year, let alone under Conte since he took over as the new Spurs boss.

However, following a unique situation in which many within the squad were recovering from bouts of COVID-19, Winks and Alli were handed rare starts at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Conte switched his formation from a 3-4-2-1 to more of a 5-3-2 against Jurgen Klopp’s side this evening, with Winks playing in the centre of a midfield trio and Dele out on the left.

The pair were both standout performers in the draw, with Winks keeping things ticking over in the middle and Alli adding attacking flair off the left.

However, Conte was seemingly not surprised by their return to form after the match. He also gave a brief mention to young Ryan Sessegnon.

He said (Football London): “I think a good performance, but I didn’t have doubts about this.

“Harry Winks is working very hard. He impressed me in training sessions for his commitment, his will, his desire. I think he’s a really good player.

“When we play in this way, with this formation, with a number four in front of the three central defenders, I think he’s very, very good. Very good.

“Good performance from him and Dele played a good game.

“Also, Dele, if we play with a 3-5-2, he’s a midfielder that is good physically, strong physically, good technique, good penetration because he has the right ability to attack. He had chances to score but good performance.

“Also Sessegnon. I know that if we want to improve, if we want to improve our level, I need to improve every single player that we have. This is the only way, the only path that we have to do.

“I know that if we improve every single player, we improve the level of this team. Otherwise, it will be very difficult to be competitive.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Dele and Winks, in particular, did themselves proud this evening. They played out of their skins and not only showed quality, but also a desire to fight for their places. Hopefully, they can kick on under Conte over the next few games before the January window.
