‘Conte is happy’ – Journalist plays down Tottenham’s chances of signing 23-year-old

Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas has suggested that Tottenham might decide against pushing ahead with a move for AS Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo as Antonio Conte is relatively happy with the options he has at his disposal.

There have been several contradictory reports regarding Tottenham’s pursuit of Zaniolo over the past couple of days.

The Daily Express claimed on Wednesday that the North London club are ‘cautiously optimistic’ about signing the winger this summer since he has only two years left on his contract and has not started talks with the Roma hierarchy regarding a new deal.

However, Corriere dello Sport asserted this week that while Spurs had an agreement in place with the Giallorossi on a deal for Zaniolo, Jose Mourinho has blocked the move.

The report claimed that the former Spurs boss had convinced the 23-year-old to remain at the Stadio Olimpico for one more season and leave next summer.

Thomas has now weighed in on the speculation, declaring that Roma want €50m (£42.1m) – €60m (£50.6m) for Zaniolo.

The journalist added that while Conte would like to add another forward to his squad, he hinted that Tottenham may not break the bank to snap up the Roma star.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is clear that Spurs are now fully focused on getting the likes of Lo Celso, Ndombele, Winks, Tanganga and Reguilon out of the door. However, I am convinced that the club will test Roma’s resolve with an offer for Zaniolo late in the transfer window. Whether the offer will be anywhere close to Roma’s valuation and whether the Serie A club will sell, remains to be seen.
