Antonio Conte names the Tottenham player who has ‘surprised’ him ‘a lot’

Antonio Conte has admitted that he has been surprised by how much Harry Kane is willing to sacrifice himself for the team’s greater good.

Kane is widely recognised as being one of the best strikers in world football thanks to his exploits for club and country over the last seven years.

However, the 28-year-old is currently going through what is his leanest patch in front of goal in his Spurs career so far, having found the back of the net just once in the Premier League this season.

Spurs fans would have been hoping that the England captain would find his goalscoring boots following Conte’s arrival but his only goal under the Italian came in Tottenham’s 2-1 loss at NS Mura in the Europa Conference League last month.

Despite Kane’s struggles in front of goal, Conte stated two weeks ago that he has been happy with the striker’s performances since he arrived at the club.

The Spurs head coach has now raved about the Spurs star, insisting that he has been surprised by the striker’s selflessness.

Conte said at the Vittorio Pozzo Award ceremony (as relayed by Alfredo Pedulla): “I have coached several top players in my career and now I have Kane, a true champion.

“He surprised me a lot, from all points of view: he makes himself available to the team despite being one of the greatest in the world.

“For me it is a great pleasure to have him in the team, to be able to count on a player of this level, with impressive technical qualities. I hope to be able to contribute to its growth.”

Kane is certainly a very rare bread in the sense that he is willing to do the dirty work for the team despite being one of the best goalscorers in world football.

It is thus not surprising that the likes of Mourinho and Conte have really taken to the 28-year-old. I am convinced that the floodgates will open for the England captain as soon as he scores a couple of goals.
