Conte opens up on his hopes for the season after Spurs blow last trophy chance

Antonio Conte has admitted after Tottenham’s defeat to Middlesbrough that his side’s performances are too inconsistent from one game to the next and there is plenty of work to be done to make the team more stable.

The past few weeks have been a rollercoaster ride for the Lilywhites, with two back-to-back home losses against Southampton and Wolves being followed by an impressive win at Manchester City.

However, far from turning a corner since the result at the Etihad, Conte’s men have since been beaten away at both Burnley and Boro, with a thumping 4-0 win against Leeds being sandwiched in-between the two defeats.

Compared to his outburst after Tottenham’s loss at Turf Moor last week, the Spurs boss was much calmer in the way he analysed his side’s FA Cup fifth-round loss on Tuesday. He stressed the need to learn from the mistakes that his side made at the Riverside Stadium.

Conte told Football.London after Tottenham’s 1-0 loss: “We had to take good learn about this defeat and continue to work because there is only one way to continue to work and try to avoid these up and downs.

“I always say we have to become stronger and if we want to become competitive then we have to be a stable team. Too many up and downs still for us and for sure we have to continue to work very hard and try in the future to learn about this defeat.”

Tottenham blew the only realistic chance they had of winning silverware this season after being knocked out of the FA Cup, and Conte insisted that the team must use the rest of the season to continue working and improving for the future.

He added: “We have to continue to work and to know that there is the opportunity to work and to know that there is the rest of the season.

“There are three months and a half to work, to work very hard and get the best result and for the team to see at the end of the season which is our position in the table.

“There is only this way and for sure we have to continue to work and to improve in many aspects. We can improve.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Four months into his reign at Spurs, Conte has so far shown to be tactically inflexible. We could have pressed Boro high up the pitch yesterday, given the quality we have in our side.

Instead, the Italian seemed content to stick to his game plan, even though it was seemingly was not working. He deserves as much blame for this defeat as the players do.
