Conte responds when asked whether he regrets not signing Eriksen in January

Antonio Conte issued a response to whether he regrets not signing Christian Eriksen for Tottenham in the January transfer window when asked this week.

Eriksen has been embarking on an incredible return to football with Brentford after suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 last summer.

The Bees signed the Dane on a six-month deal until the end of the season and he has impressed in his last five starts for the club, helping them win all five while contributing directly to three goals (Transfermarkt).

Spurs allegedly hold an interest in re-signing Eriksen this summer upon the end of his contract which would make him a free agent (I News).

The 30-year-old left Spurs to join Conte’s Inter Milan in January 2020, where he went on to become a key player in the side that won the Serie A title last season.

Ahead of Tottenham’s clash with Brentford and reunion with Eriksen on Saturday, Conte has praised Thomas Frank’s side for taking the plunge on the midfielder while answering whether he regrets not bringing him back to north London.

Asked if he regrets not signing Eriksen in January, Conte said (via Football.London): “Honestly, no one knew the possibility of Christian coming back to football. It was a surprise for everybody.

“I think in this respect, Brentford was very good to understand the situation and to go into the situation, and to sign Christian. I’m really surprised but I’m not the only person surprised to see him playing in this way.

“I don’t want to remember what happened to him because it makes me very sad, but to see him now playing at this level is incredible. It’s amazing. I’m very happy for him.

“For sure, he had always great joy in playing football, but if before he was enjoying it 100%, now it’s 200%.

“To go from a situation where you can’t play football for the rest of your life, to playing football again, I think that makes you happy and makes you enjoy this sport, and your passion, much more.

“I wish for him and his family the best. They deserve it and it will be a great joy to see him on the pitch, playing and doing what he likes to do.”

No one knew how Eriksen would do after the awful events of last year and Brentford are being rewarded after taking that risk with him. It would have been tricky to forecast it at the time, but they could end up having another opportunity to secure his services again this summer.
