Conte reveals the ‘big surprise’ he has found when working with Harry Kane

Antonio Conte has revealed that the ‘big surprise’ he has found from working with Harry Kane is the Tottenham striker’s personality and work rate.

Kane got on the scoresheet for the second match in a row today as Spurs recorded a narrow 1-0 victory at home to Wolves. This came just one week after the England captain’s 96th-minute equaliser at Stamford Bridge.

The Tottenham academy graduate even became the all-time leading Premier League scorer for a single club with his back post header today, moving clear of Sergio Aguero at Man City (Premier League).

Conte has worked with plenty of world-class players in his time as a coach, but he opened up on his contrasting experience with Harry Kane in his press conference today.

The Italian revealed some world-class players can become lazy without the ball, but Kane is always willing to run and work hard to help the team. Conte described him as not only a great player, but also a ‘really good person’.

He said (Football London): But Harry is a player who has to make the difference, for his quality, for his ability. We’re talking about a really world-class striker who can be dangerous in all aspects on the pitch.

“We tried to exploit him, to give him the possibility to score. For me, the big surprise about Harry is not only on the football aspect but the person.

“We’re talking about a really good person, a really good man. He’s always ready to help the team, to work for the team.

“Usually, when you have this type of player, they can be a bit lazy without the ball. Because they like to play with the ball but without the ball [they think] ‘I don’t run because I have to be fresh when we have the ball’.

But this was a bit surprise with me, working with Harry. I know he reached another big achievement, a personal big achievement.

“But we’re trying to work together, with the team and always with Harry to have not only personal achievements, like last season for example when Son was top scorer in the league, but to try to have a big achievement together for the team and the club.

“I think every single player is ready to exchange a personal achievement to reach a trophy. We’re working on this aspect. The path is difficult, the path is long but we have to try to do this.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

The only way you could ever give Kane stick is out of bitterness or jealousy. He is world-class on the pitch, professional away from it, does loads of great stuff for charity, and keeps himself to himself. I hope one day he has a Premier League trophy to throw at the doubters.
