Conte reveals what he has ‘asked’ Spurs for ahead of January transfer window

Antonio Conte has revealed that he has asked the club for more time to assess the squad before deciding on how it can be improved in the transfer market.

Since Conte’s arrival, the speculation linking Spurs with moves for various Serie A stars has gone into hyperdrive.

The likes of Fabrizio Romano have claimed the Italian will ask the North London club for three new additions in January – a centre-back, a centre midfielder and a striker.

Additionally, it has also been reported that Conte has decided the likes of Tanguy Ndombele and Steven Bergwijn are not part of his plans.

However, the Spurs boss has now made it clear that he has asked for one more month to assess what the squad needs.

Conte told Football.London: “The consideration and the judgement [of how well the team is doing] can change only for one win or one loss.

“I asked also to the club for another month to understand very well the situation and to make the right evaluation because I think this is fair.

“As I said after Mura we know that at this moment that if you compare this team with the past it is less strong, but generally it is normal because when there is a change of generation it can happen this type of situation.

“It is not simple to replace players and to find players who are a ready to fight for a place in the Champions League and be competitive to win something. We know which is the situation.”

The Spurs boss reiterated he is now focused on getting the best out of the players at his disposal but did admit the club will strengthen if the right opportunities present themselves in the transfer market.

He added: “I am sure with work we can improve the situation but at the same time we have to find the right way to also improve the quality of this team and we need time because the situation is not simple, not only for Tottenham but also the other teams.

“We know this and now the most important thing for us is to try to improve the situation is working. As now is the only way is in our hands.”

“Then if there is the possibility to improve the quality then we will try to do it. Now my first thoughts is to work to exploit and to get the best out of the players that I have.

“I have a good group of players and I enjoy a lot to work with this group of players. Now we must be focused on this and then there is time to make the right evaluation with the club.”

Conte and Paratici will likely have had discussions about potential incomings and departures but as the Italian explains above, the plan would not be set in stone as of yet.

I can certainly see the likes of Bergwijn and Ndombele coming into the team and impressing over the next few weeks, which would likely change Conte’s plan on who to pursue in January.
