Conte reveals what he has been doing in training to combat lack of Spurs goals

Antonio Conte revealed in his post-match interview that he has been setting up drills in training where his players have to break down a team with ten men behind the ball.

This comes after Tottenham were held to a 0-0 draw away at the Brentford Community Stadium, just hours after Arsenal cruised past Man United at the Emirates.

While Spurs looked to be in an extremely strong position two weeks ago, having been in flying form and watching their rivals falter, there has been another twist to the tail.

With Spurs dropping points in back to back games, and Arsenal coming through two of their hardest fixtures on paper with wins against Chelsea and Man United, things are looking tough for Antonio Conte’s men.

The players looked flat and devoid of any creative spark this evening, as they did at home to Brighton last weekend. If they have any hopes of beating Arsenal to fourth, they will need to rally and find more consistency in the final five fixtures.

Conte admitted Spurs were poor offensively today and opened up on his system and how he has been trying to prepare the Tottenham players in training.

He said (Football London): “I think in the last two games we have struggled offensively because we found two teams that were very good defensively. Without the ball, both team defended very deep with the whole team.

“This aspect we are working, after the game against Brighton we tried to work in training to beat 10 players behind the ball. In the end this is a consequence of scoring many goals, you start to become a dangerous team the opponent tries to pay more attention when they face you.

“Today we wanted to get three points, but the draw was fair and we have to accept this kind of result.”

He added: “If you see in the last two games, I consider our work, our system, good defensively because we didn’t concede a goal but we were a bit poor offensively.

“I don’t think it’s the system, I think it’s the way you attack. I think we have to try to find the right balance, offensively and defensively.

“Before we conceded more goals but we scored a lot but now we’re defensively better but in the last two games but because we played against the teams with the great attention. They played a really good game defensively.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

It certainly isn’t a problem with the concept of the system, but Conte hasn’t yet been able to sign his ideal players to get the most out of the system. Many of these players have no experience in a back three formation, so it will take time to improve and become consistent.
