Conte reveals what stands between Davinson Sanchez and being a ‘top defender’

Antonio Conte has claimed Davinson Sanchez has room for improvement at Tottenham and has challenged him to regularly complete matches will full focus throughout.

Sanchez has been rejuvenated since Conte’s arrival, becoming a key fixture in the Italian’s three-man defence.

The 25-year-old has featured in nine of Tottenham’s last 10 games (Transfermarkt) and has seen his overall defensive numbers trend upwards under the former Inter Milan boss (Sky Sports).

Sanchez has been forced to step up for Spurs in recent weeks due to the absences of Eric Dier and Cristian Romero for portions of the campaign.

However, Conte feels the Colombia international has not reached the peak of what he can offer just yet and believes he possesses the right qualities to take the next step and become a ‘top defender’ in the Premier League.

Conte said (via Football.London): “He has a lot of space for improvement. He’s good physically, he’s fast. He’s good technically.

“He has the right characteristics to become a top defender but he needs to be focused from start to end. This is the gap to him becoming a top defender.”

Sanchez has had a very mixed Tottenham career but he seems to be finding some stability under Conte. The system looks to be suiting him right now and he has appeared to be more focused and less error-prone – especially in recent games. Consistency is key, though, and that will be tested in the next handful of matches.
