Conte reveals why he took Emerson Royal off at half-time against Leicester

Antonio Conte has revealed that he took Emerson Royal off at half-time against Leicester City because the defender was carrying a ‘physical problem’ (Football London).

The Brazilian started at right-wing-back against the Foxes but struggled to impose himself on the match and was taken off at the break.

Matt Doherty, who has found opportunities few and far between under Antonio Conte, impressed in his 45-minute cameo, even setting up Tottenham’s second goal.

The Italian boss has now revealed that Emerson was carrying a physical problem into the match, causing him to suffer a lot in the first half.

Conte added that Spurs are managing a few injury problems ahead of the Chelsea match this weekend, although he didn’t mention Emerson by name (Football London). It remains to be seen whether the right-wing-back will be available for Sunday.

Conte said: “About Emerson, must be very clear that he started the game with a physical problem and I can only thank him for his availability. He was suffering a lot in the first half. He is only 22-years-old.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I feel bad for Emerson. He moved to a new league and a new country, in the middle of COVID, and was then thrown into a new position. I’m sure he will come good, but I would love to see Doherty get a chance this weekend.
