‘Contender’ – Journalist provides update on Spurs interest in Inter Milan defender

Dean Jones has revealed that Inter Milan have been offered centre-backs to replace rumoured Tottenham target Stefan De Vrij.

De Vrij’s current contract at the San Siro runs out at the end of the season, and reports linking the experienced central defender with a move to the North London club have intensified over the last week.

Football Insider reported recently that Antonio Conte had already spoken to the 30-year-old about a move to Spurs during the January transfer window.

The report added that the Netherlands international could be available for a knock-down price in January, and suggested that Tottenham and Atletico Madrid were at the front of the queue for his signature.

The interest of Spurs and Atletico in De Vrij was backed up by TuttoMercatoWeb, who claimed on Tuesday that although Inter had offered the centre-back a new deal, he was ‘lukewarm’ about the offer.

Jones has now revealed that Spurs are waiting to see how the former Lazio star’s situation develops.

When asked if the Nerazzurri defender is one of the centre-backs on Tottenham’s wishlist, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “He’s a contender, we’d have to wait and see. Spurs are waiting really.

“Inter have offered him a new contract and at the same time, they’re being offered players of their own in case the player does leave.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Although De Vrij is the wrong side of 30, the investment required from Spurs will be quite modest, owing to the centre-back’s contract situation. So, I would expect the North London club to explore a deal for the Dutchman in January. Whether he is at the top of Conte’s wishlist, remains to be seen.
