‘Contracts have already been agreed’ – Alasdair Gold gives transfer update on Spurs defender

Alasdair Gold has revealed that the arrangements have already been made for Tottenham to sign Cristian Romero on a permanent basis.

Spurs signed Romero on a season-long loan deal from Atalanta in the summer, with reports indicating the club had an option to buy the centre-back on a permanent basis for £46.75m.

The 23-year-old had an impressive start to life at Tottenham, establishing himself as a regular in the side initially under Nuno Espirito Santo and later under Antonio Conte.

However, the centre-back’s progress was derailed by a hamstring injury that he picked up while being away on international duty with Argentina last month. Conte has revealed that the defender is expected to be out of action at least until January.

Some might have been concerned about how Romero’s injury impacts his chances of completing a permanent move to Spurs but Gold has now stated that the move is not in any doubt.

The journalist revealed that although it was reported that Tottenham had the ‘option’ of singing the centre-back permanently, the deal is very close to an ‘obligation’ to buy.

Gold said on his YouTube Channel: “That deal, although technically termed as an option to buy, it is as close you can get to an obligation. Without calling it an obligation.

“That’s what I’ve been told. The contracts have already been agreed.

“That’s why it was billed as a long-term deal, before it was announced as a loan. Spurs expect to take up that option.”

Gold’s revelation makes sense as there was little intensive for Atalanta to give Spurs an option to make the deal permeant. I suspect there are clauses in the deal that would force the North London club to activate the option if the centre-back plays a handful of matches, which the 23-year-old might have already.
