‘Cornerstone’ – European football expert tells Spurs fans all about Dragusin’s skillset

European football expert Kevin Hatchard says that Radu Dragusin is expected to be a future superstar in his native Romania, pointing out that the youngster has all the attributes to evolve into a top-class centre-back.

Tottenham appear to have fulfilled Ange Postecoglou’s wish of bringing a centre-back through the door before the club’s trip to Old Trafford on Sunday.

Dragusin reportedly completed his medical at Hotspur Way on Wednesday evening and is thus expected to be registered in time to be part of the matchday squad against Manchester United (Football.London).

What will Radu Dragusin bring to Tottenham?

Spurs do not have a great history with Romanian players, with Gheorghe Popescu and Ilie Dumitrescu flattering to deceive in the one season they spent at White Hart Lane, while more recently, Vlad Chiriches also failed to live up to his billing despite arriving with a big reputation.

Dragusin certainly seems much more suited to the Premier League than his compatriot Chiriches and Hatchard revealed that there are huge expectations for the 21-year-old back in his home country.

The journalist told talkSPORT (10/1 9:26 am): “Radu Dragusin is seen as somebody who’s a rising star in Romanian football. Just 21, lots of potential, was on the books of Juventus but didn’t quite make a consistent breakthrough there.

“That’s not a surprise given the quality of players they have but he did the right thing, he went away and played for some lesser lights. Learned his trade and since his move to Genoa, he’s been able to enhance his reputation.

“He’s a big guy, he’s 6’3 and he very much uses those gifts, he’s strong in the air, strong in the tackle, reads the game well and he’s from a sporting family.

“His mother was a basketball star, his father was a volleyball player. Bayern Munich were very interested in bringing him to Germany, that shows you the kind of respect that he has within football and he’s seen as somebody who could be the cornerstone of the Romanian defence for years to come.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The most exciting thing about Dragusin is the fact that he is not yet the finished product and potentially has a huge ceiling. The former Juventus man does not appear to have any obvious weaknesses to his game and Postecoglou will fancy his chances of getting the best out of him.
