‘Costing them games’ – Tim Sherwood pinpoints who needs to take responsibility at Spurs

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has claimed that the players have to take responsibility for their defensive lapses of judgement, rather than Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday which dented their hopes of a Premier League top four finish and securing Champions League football next season.

While Tottenham have now scored in each of their last 37 Premier League games, there are concerns at the other end of the pitch with 38 goals having now been conceded in the top flight this season.

The marking for the first Wolves goal was questionable with Gomes finding himself completely unmarked to head home

The second goal was a mistake from Yves Bissouma who carelessly lost the ball on the edge of the Wolves box which allowed and he failed to track the run of Gomes to net a second.

Tim Sherwood criticises Tottenham’s defence

Sherwood told The Weekend Wrap on Optus Sport: “Sometimes I think players on the pitch…they have to take responsibility on the pitch themselves,”

“Doesn’t matter what the manager thinks, if it’s in and around your penalty area, forget playing out when you’re into injury-time, kick it in the stands, get it up the field.

“At the moment, game stakes, wrong decisions at the wrong time are costing them games.

“I don’t think it’s down to the manager, I think it’s down to the individuals in the moment and making decisions on the pitch. Sometimes you have to take it out of the hands of the manager.”

Tottenham now have a fortnight before their next match when they host Crystal Palace at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday March 2nd.

Saturday showed that there is still a lot of work to be done and patience must be shown among the fanbase to give Postecoglou the time to continue to overhaul the squad.

The absence of Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie was a big blow against Wolves with Ben Davies and Emerson Royal unable to offer the same impact at full-back from the blueprint of attacking football which the Australian has adopted in North London.
