VAR may have been introduced to the Premier League with the intent of reducing the number of controversial decisions, but if anything it has only amplified complaints about refereeing calls.
The way the technology has been implemented by the Premier League has come in for a lot of criticism with many questioning if the technology is fit for purpose.
There have been a lot of question marks over the lack of consistency in the application of the technology with VAR often intervening in decisions that aren’t ‘clear and obvious’.
Additionally, some fans have complained that VAR diminishes the jubilation that is felt when the ball hits the back of the net as one always has to wait for the goals to be checked.
Now, Tottenham legend Osvaldo Ardiles has called for VAR to be temporarily suspended amidst the recent string of controversial decisions.
The Argentine took to twitter to post the following message:

While I share people’s frustration with the implementation of VAR, I am concerned that people are too keen to throw the baby out with the bathwater. While the way the technology is being used has to be improved and revised, there is no question in my mind that the technology itself is here to stay. One possible way to go would be to offer each team two or three referrals per game to chose which decision they want VAR to review.
