Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero has now sent a farewell message to Spurs fans ahead of his transfer to Atletico Madrid.
Cristian Romero‘s transfer out of Tottenham Hotspur had long been expected this summer transfer window.
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi had made it clear that he would not stand in the way of the Argentine, whom he had promised to help find a new club this summer.
Interest in the centre-back was plentiful, with the likes of Inter Milan, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid showing a keen interest in signing Romero.
However, it was Diego Simeone’s side that came out on top in the transfer battle for the Argentine, reaching an agreement with Tottenham for a £34 million transfer.
Cristian Romero sends emotional message to Tottenham fans
With Romero now confirmed as an Atleti player, the former Tottenham captain has now taken to social media to share an emotional farewell message to Spurs supporters.
The Argentine spent five seasons in north London after having joined back in the 2021-22 season from Atalanta.
Romero played a big role, captaining the side that helped Tottenham end their near two-decade wait for silverware when the Lilywhites clinched the Europa League title back in 2025.
Reflecting on some of his cherished memories in the Lilywhite of Spurs, he wrote:
‘Today, I say goodbye to a place that, for five seasons, was much more than a club. It was my home, my challenge and the place where my family and I built such an important part of our lives.
‘I leave with a heart full of memories and enormous pride for everything we lived and achieved together.
‘When I arrived, I had a clear dream: to leave my name in this club’s history. I knew the only way was through hard work, sacrifice and achieving something that had seemed so difficult for so long: lifting a trophy again.
‘And we did it.
‘The journey wasn’t perfect, but I don’t want that to define my goodbye. I choose to remember the happy moments, the lessons, the people who stood by me and, above all, the love I received during these five years.
‘Thank you to everyone at the club who shared this journey with me. Coaches, teammates, staff and every person working behind the scenes you are all part of my story and have a place in my heart.
‘And to the fans: Thank you for loving me, respecting me and making me feel like one of you from day one. Thank you for every hug, every song, every flag, every applause and for always being there.
‘I know I wasn’t perfect, but one thing gives me peace: I always gave everything. I defended this shirt with pride and with all my heart.
‘THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING
‘I’m leaving the club, but a part of my heart will always remain here.
‘Once I was one of you. Today, I leave as one of you forever.

Spurs enter new era as Europa League heroes depart
Spurs’ recent transfer dealings have seen a major overhaul of the squad that helped secure the club’s last piece of silverware a few campaigns ago.
Brennan Johnson, Djed Spence, and Cristian Romero were amongst those to have played a big part in the Europa League-winning campaign and have now departed from Tottenham.
This marks the start of a new era under Roberto De Zerbi, who continues to shape his squad in his mould ahead of the 26-27 campaign.
