Cristian Romero claims ‘excellent’ Spurs signing is ‘going to add a lot to the group’

Cristian Romero has praised recent signing Clement Lenglet, insisting that the centre-back will prove to be a valuable member of the squad over the course of the season.

Lenglet, who arrived on a season-long loan move from Barcelona this summer, has started Tottenham’s last two matches against Fulham and Marseille.

The French international has demonstrated his quality on the ball in both matches, and Romero is hopeful that he will integrate quickly into the team’s style of play.

When asked about Lenglet, the centre-back said within the club’s matchday programme for the Champions League clash against their French opponents (07/09/22): “We’ve built a good working relationship within the group since his arrival and we’re helping him to integrate as fast as possible.

“As a player, he’s excellent and he’s going to add a lot to the group, which is going to be paramount for the year ahead, seeing as we’re involved in many competitions where we want to be at our highest level. These types of players make the squad better, so it’s very important to have them in our ranks.”

Lenglet is just one of seven players that Tottenham signed over the summer and Romero believes that players who have come through the door have considerably elevated the quality of the squad.

He added: “All the new players are making a great squad even better – the club has made great signings and that’s important. Sure, it’s not easy initially to adapt to our style of play given the tactics we employ, but after that initial adaptation phase, we’re already witnessing their potential and what great help they’re going to be to the team.”

The Argentine remarked that Spurs now have the quality to compete against the best sides in the Premier League and insisted that winning a trophy is well within the club’s reach this season.

The 24-year-old also admitted to learning a lot under Antonio Conte and his coaching staff over the last ten months.

“For this season, on a personal level, I would like to add my name to that of the players who have won a trophy here at Tottenham – that would be the greatest achievement,” said Romero. “I think it’s in our grasp. It’s my personal target, to achieve it as a team, with this manager.

“Conte’s experience is well known and, to me, it’s very important to have him as my coach. I have learned from him over the past few months that we’ve worked together and there’s still plenty more to learn, so I’m eager to learn and listen to what he has to say on a daily basis. We are one of the top teams out there. We just need to push ourselves, continue on this path we’re on and meet the expectations that we have.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am a huge fan of Davies and I believe he is a better defender than Lenglet. However, the 27-year-old’s quality on the ball offers us another outlet and makes us better at playing through the lines. The on-loan Barcelona man could be a good option when we come against low-blocks.
