Cristian Romero deletes post criticising refereeing decision in Spurs vs Arsenal

Cristian Romero has deleted a post criticising the decision to rule out Micky van de Ven’s goal for offside in Tottenham’s 3-2 loss to Arsenal on Sunday.

Arsenal took the lead in the 15th minute when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg headed the ball into his own net but Tottenham thought they had drawn level just minutes later.

Van de Ven pounced on a loose ball after Pedro Porro’s initial long-range shot was blocked, with the Dutchman wheeling away in celebration after finding the back of the net.

Cristian Romero not happy with offside decision

However, the Spurs centre-back was adjudged to have been marginally offside by VAR, with just inches separating him and Gabriel Magalhaes.

Some Tottenham fans have taken issue with the fact that it was still ruled offside although Takehiro Tomiyasu and Gabriel had both touched the ball before it came to Van de Ven.

According to The Daily Mail, Romero himself was fuming at the decision, with the Spurs vice-captain taking to social media to write: ‘West Ham scored the same goal against us at home’. However, the Argentine is then thought to have later deleted that post.

That was offside by the letter of the law. Anyone who says that it was not because Tomiyasu deliberately played the ball does not understand what the law defines as ‘deliberate play’ in this context.

One can argue the law needs to be changed but there is no doubt that the letter of the law was followed on this occasion. It is unfortunate for us that Van de Ven was offside by mere inches.
