‘Great pedigree’ – Postecoglou admits player has been outstanding since ‘day one’

Tottenham Hotspur have had a number of standout performers this season under the leadership of Ange Postecoglo, with Cristian Romero being one of those who have caught the eye.

Following the depature of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich earlier this summer, Romero was given the responsibility of vice-captain along with James Maddison by Postecoglou.

Romero has forged a solid partnership alongside summer arrival Micky van de Ven at the heart of the Spurs defence in Postecoglou’s new look side, with the Dutchman’s pace to cover allowing Romero to push forward and contribute in attacking phases.

Postecoglou was asked about Romero during this afternoon’s pre-Aston Villa press conference and has sung the praises of the Argentine international.

Romero has matured under Ange Postecoglou

Postecoglou told Football.London: He’s outstanding but I thought he was from day one. He’s a World Cup winner. You don’t win World Cups as a starter, a contributor [unless you’re good].

“He’s got great pedigree, he’s a great defender, great guy, very driven and motivated. Highly, highly competitive in everything he does and I love that.

“There’s nothing more you’d want in an athlete and he’s a great example for the other guys.”

Arguably, Romero’s only blot on his copy book this season was the red card against Chelsea, however, we have seen players from other clubs escape similar punishment.

The responsibility of being vice-captain has definitely seen him to not be as rash with some challenges as we have witnessed in previous seasons and appears to be enjoying holding down a senior role within the dressing room.
