Cristian Romero labelled ‘lazy’ and a ‘disgrace’ by former Tottenham Hotspur scout

A former Tottenham Hotspur scout has been appalled by what he has seen from Cristian Romero this season, and he has not held back.

This was supposed to be the season where Romero stepped up and became the face of Tottenham, with the Argentine being handed a new contract last summer and the captain’s armband after Heung-min Son’s departure.

However, rather than stepping up, the Argentine has allowed his bad habits to creep into his game again, with big question marks being raised about his discipline and temperament after multiple red cards.

Additionally, the centre-back has not been able to provide the kind of performances and leadership that Tottenham need at a time of crisis, where they are desperately trying to fight off relegation.

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero accused of being ‘lazy’ and disinterested

Romero did come out publicly and accept responsibility after Tottenham’s 3-0 loss to Forest – a game where he failed to cover himself in glory.

Former Spurs scout Mick Brown has blasted the centre-back, accusing him of playing as if a relegation battle is beneath him.

Brown told Football Insider: “Cristian Romero is becoming a real concern for Tottenham. People can talk about him and his qualities which are clear, and in a good side he can look top-class, but there are issues with his character which are a problem.

“He’s liable to blow a fuse, make a silly challenge and get sent off, or go wandering and leave his responsibilities at the back. In the game against Forest, I thought he looked lazy and like it was all beneath him, and that’s the last thing you need from your captain in this situation.

“At one stage, he lost the ball high up the pitch, Forest counter-attacked and he was nowhere to be seen. It was only after the ball had been cleared that he came jogging back. It was a disgrace.”

Spurs told they would be better off selling Romero

Romero is attracting plenty of interest from the biggest clubs in Europe, and suggestions are that the defender could leave Spurs this summer, even if they stay up.

Brown has urged Tottenham to cash in on the Argentine, asserting that the club would be better off without the World Cup winner.

The former Spurs scout added: “Tottenham have a choice now, will they be prepared to let him go or not? I would suggest, from what I’ve heard, they’re going to be ready to let him go.

“He’s done very little to aid their situation, he looks like he would rather be elsewhere, and if that is the case, then Tottenham would be better off letting him go.”
