Cristian Romero names the Spurs player who has ‘really surprised’ him

Cristian Romero has admitted that the player who has surprised him the most during his time at Tottenham Hotspur is Dejan Kulusevski.

The Swedish international joined Tottenham on loan from Juventus until the 30th of June 2023 which will see Spurs pay a €10 million (£8.3million) fee. €3 million (£2.5 million) of which is for the current season, and a further €7 million (£5.8milion) for the next campaign.

Kulusevski has been in impressive form since swapping Turin for north London with three goals and six assists in 11 Premier League appearances, the 21-year-old is currently averaging a direct goal contribution every 93.5 minutes in the top flight (transfermarkt).

The left-footer was again one of the best players on the pitch during Spurs’ 4-0 win against Aston Villa, which saw him net the second goal of the game and provide the assist for Heung-min Son’s hat-trick.

Romero believes Kulusevski has brought something new to the side and has slotted in perfectly, while also acknowledging the impact of another January arrival, Rodrigo Bentancur.

Speaking to The Athletic ahead of the trip to Villa Park, Romero said: “The person who’s really surprised me is Kulusevski because I think he’s really added something either we didn’t have or didn’t see so often. He’s a really bright and intelligent player who’s become a vital cog in our system.

“Bentancur I was aware of from Italy, I always thought he was the kind of player who could cut it in the Premier League. What’s surprised me is the level at which he’s doing really, really well. How important he’s become for us so quickly.

“The performances of the team in general speak for each player but in particular speak for him and how well he has done for us.”

The signings of Kulusevski and Bentancur have proved to be a masterstroke by Fabio Paratici with the pair having had a huge influence on how Antonio Conte has influenced his players to adapt his style of play.

Romero has been an absolute rock at the back for Tottenham and even at the tender age of 23, has proven he is a world class defender already.
