Cristian Romero offers explanation behind injury-hit first Spurs campaign

Cristian Romero has claimed his injury-hit first season at Tottenham can be put down to missing pre-season ahead of moving to North London last summer.

The Argentine defender joined Spurs from Atalanta and quickly established himself as a key player in Antonio Conte’s three-man defence.

But Romero’s debut season in England was not all plain sailing as he suffered three separate injuries across different points of the campaign.

In his biggest stint out of the side, he missed a total of 16 games for Tottenham with a hamstring injury across 80 days between November and February (Transfermarkt).

Although returning to contention for the majority of 2022, the 24-year-old was then out for the Premier League run-in with a hip issue and absent for Tottenham’s final three matches.

He also picked up a minor knee injury at the start of the campaign, as well as having to miss two games in September through Covid-19 quarantine after playing for Argentina in then government red-listed countries (The Guardian).

But Romero, who cited a previously flawless injury history, put his stop-start Spurs season down to a lack of pre-season training over the summer.

He told ESPN (as translated by AlbicelesteTalk): “Reason of my injuries? In my whole career I had no injuries, and this season I had three. I think the reason for that is that I didn’t have a pre-season last summer. So now, I will do everything to have the best pre-season this summer.”

Romero managed to put together a pretty strong campaign overall despite it being disrupted with a big injury right in the middle.

But that just shows how determined and talented he is and the fact that Spurs should feel fortunate to have a star like this at their disposal, so hopefully next season will be kinder to him.
