Cristian Romero opens up on new Tottenham contract, denies he said he wanted to leave

Cristian Romero has offered clarity on his Tottenham future, explaining his decision to commit to a long-term contract in north London and dismissing any suggestion that he was looking for a move away during the summer.

Thomas Frank would no doubt be glad to have Tottenham Hotspur’s World Cup-winning centre-back on his side as he looks to get Spurs back on track following a dismal domestic campaign last time out.

Cristian Romero has been vital to Frank’s setup so far, helping Tottenham to three clean sheets in their opening four league fixtures, while leading the side to third place in the Premier League table.

Attention now turns to the UEFA Champions League, where Tottenham will be looking to get off to a winning start when Villarreal visits the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Cristian Romero reveals why he signed a new contract with Tottenham

Spurs could very easily have lost Romero during the summer window, with reports claiming that Atletico Madrid were keen on landing the Argentine defender.

However, Romero opted to stay put at Tottenham, extending his stay by signing a new deal that runs until 2029 and secures his services in N17 for the long term.

Speaking to Tottenham’s official channels, Romero has now explained his reasons for signing a fresh contract, while making clear that speculation over his exit was never driven by him.

He said: “Sometimes in football, stuff that comes out in the media… I never said I wanted to leave the club. Nothing came from me in that effect.

“It is important what the manager and President say. I am very happy here, it is like a family. I like the manager. I like the way we work, the way we train. Always things can improve but I think everyone here at all levels are taking the right steps to improve. I am very happy here.

“It is a bit of everything. It is about the training staff, technical staff, players, fans, people who run the club. It is about all of us. We need to push in the same direction. We know as players what the aims and objectives are this season. We need to keep going in the same direction.”

Spurs must match Romero’s ambition in the new era

Romero is a winner, with the Argentine having lifted silverware at both national and club level, and it is clear that he intends to continue chasing success in north London.

Spurs, however, have not always matched that same winning ambition on the pitch, yet there is now the feeling that the club is entering an era of change.

Former chairman Daniel Levy has since departed N17, and with new leadership in place, there is renewed promise that Spurs will finally show greater ambition on the pitch as they aim for more tangible success.
