Cristian Romero stats show why he can lead Tottenham to Europa League glory

Cristian Romero’s underlying stats from the Tottenham vs Eintracht Frankfurt clash have now proved what Spurs fans have been saying all along: it was a captain’s performance.

Thursday night was one of the biggest of the season for Tottenham Hotspur, as Ange Postecoglou’s men needed a result to keep their European dream alive.

A first-half penalty from Dominic Solanke, calmly slotted down the middle, proved enough for Tottenham, as they booked their place in the Europa League semi-finals.

Awaiting Spurs on 1 May 2025 is Bodo/Glimt, with the first leg set to be played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Cristian Romero stars in Europa League win for Tottenham

Of course, it was a team performance from Tottenham against Frankfurt on Thursday, with every player sticking to the game plan and executing their tasks very well.

Cristian Romero, however, stood out above the rest, with fans hailing Romero’s showing as a “captain’s” display – and it truly felt like a man-of-the-match performance against Frankfurt.

Now, the underlying numbers back up those claims. According to statistics, no player had a significantly higher rating than Cristian Romero on the night. Defensively and offensively, he was rock solid.

The Argentine managed two shots, completed 39 of his 46 passes (85%), created one chance, had 71 touches, with two of those coming in the opposition box, and completed both of his attempted dribbles. He also played four passes into the final third and wasn’t dispossessed once (FotMob).

Romero’s defensive masterclass highlights Spurs leadership qualities

On the defensive side of things, Romero was just as immense. He made one tackle (1/2), registered one block, produced 10 clearances (including five headed), and added four interceptions.

Across the game, he made 18 defensive actions and registered eight recoveries, while not being dribbled past once.

He also won nine duels and lost just three. On the ground, he won five of his six duels (83%), and in the air, he came out on top in four out of six (67%).

It was everything you’d want from a defender in a high-stakes European night – assured, aggressive, and above all, reliable. Romero didn’t just anchor the backline, he led it.
