A fresh update has now revealed what Cristian Romero’s plans are this summer as transfer interest in the Tottenham centre-back emerges from Atletico Madrid ahead of the window.
The Spurs vice-captain enters the final two years of his deal this summer and has been widely reported that Tottenham are ready to offer Romero a big pay rise as they try to tie him down to a long-term deal.
However, it has been claimed by several sources over recent months that Romero is hesitant to commit to a new contract at Spurs as he is keen on playing Champions League football next season.
A couple of weeks ago, it emerged that the Lilywhites are starting to run out of patience with their vice-captain. It was asserted that Tottenham were set to hand Romero an ultimatum by making it clear to him that he would be sold this summer if he does not commit to a new deal.

Cristian Romero’s Tottenham plan amid Atletico interest
Just a couple of days ago, reports from Spain claimed that Atletico Madrid had contacted Romero about a transfer this summer, although the La Liga club were yet to reach out to Spurs.
Now, a new update from The Daily Mail has also backed up Atletico’s interest in Romero, explaining that Diego Simeone’s men are closely monitoring developments over the 26-year-old’s future.
The publication adds that the centre-back is interested in exploring a move away from Tottenham this summer as he is keen to play in the Champions League next season.
If this is true, that means that Ange Postecoglou’s men may have to win the Europa League in order to convince their vice-captain to stay.
Spurs already searching for a Romero replacement
This new report comes on the back of various rumours over recent weeks regarding Spurs’ search for a potential successor to the former Juventus man.
It was suggested earlier this week that Tottenham have identified Marc Guehi as the perfect option to replace Romero this summer.
The England international, who enters the final year of his deal at Crystal Palace this June, is expected to be on his way out of Selhurst Park at the end of the season.
