Cristian Romero has been a huge miss for Tottenham

Cristian Romero’s injury has been a devastating one. Other than 15 minutes against Chelsea, Romero has been out for over 3 months, missing nearly 20 games already this season.

His absence has affected Tottenham’s defence and attack. Spurs have only kept a clean sheet in 3 of the fixtures Romero has missed and is still one of the Premier League’s leading progressive passers from centre-back.

However, it is essential that Romero remains available once he makes his return which is why the club are being so cautious about bringing him back into the fold.

Ange Postecoglou gives an update on Romero’s fitness

Speaking before Tottenham’s final Europa League league stage fixture against Elfsborg, Ange Postecoglou gave an update on Romero’s recovery.

Postecoglou said (FootballLondon): “Cuti is a still of a slow burner and we’re mindful his injury is a bit different. Not on the horizon at the moment in terms of this weekend.”

This update confirms that the Argentine will miss Elfsborg as well as Spurs’ trip to Brentford on Sunday. However, Romero was spotted back in training with Micky Van de Ven earlier this week.

Postecoglou and Romero will be desperate to make the trip to Anfield next week

Having seemingly come back too soon in the Premier League match against Chelsea, Postecoglou will not want to make the same mistake with Romero.

Nevertheless, next week’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool is an enormous fixture with the hope that Spurs will make the cup final should they hold on to their 1-0 lead from the first leg.

Any hypothetical cup success cannot mitigate the disappointing league results Spurs have endured, but a cup final would significantly shift the tone of the season should Spurs muster up a result.
