Cristian Stellini comments on what success looks like for Spurs this season

Tottenham Hotspur’s assistant manager Cristian Stellini has been speaking to the press ahead of the weekend’s Premier League action and has commented on what he believes would make this season a success for Spurs.

Despite a frustratingly inconsistent campaign, Spurs do find themselves sitting in fourth place in the Premier League table as things stand.

The North London side are currently four points behind Manchester United in third, and four points clear of Newcastle United, who have two games in hand on Spurs.

The battle for Champions League qualification seems tougher than ever this year, with Arsenal and Manchester City seemingly fighting for the title, while Liverpool close in on the top four, too.

With such a competitive field, the race for the top four appears to be the main objective for Spurs this season, particularly given the fact the Lilywhites crashed out of the FA Cup in midweek. Aside from the Champions League, the Premier League is all Tottenham have to focus on now.

Spurs make the trip to Wolves tomorrow afternoon to look to maintain their push for Champions League football next season and need to put in a much-improved performance than what was witnessed at Brammal Lane.

When asked whether finishing in the top four is enough for Tottenham, given the fans’ desire to win a trophy, Stellini had the following to say.

He told Football.London: “Everyone wants this, only the fans can expect every year, only the fans need to be happy with the team and the way the team plays, but we have to show on the pitch, this is our job, this is the difference between us and the fans.”

“We have to react immediately because that game was not good enough and we don’t want to be like this again and we don’t want to show this to the fans again. We have to create a good mentality, when we speak sometimes, I sometimes feel we speak too much about a trophy and less about the mentality,” Stellini continued.

On the FA Cup in particular, Stellini added: “We have to work on this aspect every day and fight against ourselves, because when you approach a game like this you have to fight against you if you think the game will be easy in the FA Cup if you play away.

“Eight teams play in the quarter-finals and four are not in the Premier League, so it’s not only us.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s incredibly disappointing that we appear to have thrown away a very good chance of winning a trophy this year, and it means the priority has to be just securing a top four finish again. It’s not enough, but it will have to suffice for this season, unfortunately.

To be realistic, it would take something of a miracle for Spurs to win the Champions League given the inconsistency shown this season and that is without factoring in the quality of opposition left in the competition.
