Cristian Stellini explains why Tottenham did not make earlier subs today

Tottenham fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Wolves in the Premier League this afternoon, compounding what was already a tough week for Spurs fans.

Despite starting the brighter side in the first 45 and both Pedro Porro and Heung-min Son hitting the crossbar, Spurs dropped back in the second half and allowed Wolves to grow into the game.

The Lilywhites struggled to create chances of note and once again conceded late in the day after a defensive mistake, with Fraser Forster parrying the ball back into the danger zone.

Adama Traore reacted faster than any in white and smashed the ball home into the top corner to earn all three points.

Despite looking stale in the second half, Antonio Conte and Cristian Stellini chose against making early substitutions, with Lucas Moura coming on for Kulusevski in the 77th minute, followed by Emerson Royal and Richarlison in the 81st and 85th respectively.

Asked why they didn’t make earlier changes, Stellini explained (Football London): “No, the team needed only five minutes to adapt.

“We were playing well, and the pace and we controlled the game. There wasn’t reason to change.

“After we change because there was a reason to change because we needed more energy and to interrupt their pace in the game, but only one detail changed the story of the game.

“Today we showed a great mentality because we came here in a situation against a team that is similar to Leicester, a great team with a good squad and we control the game for 60 minutes.

“We play different if you compare the game in Leicester to the game today. I think the mentality today was good.

“It is a lesson we have to learn because when you start the game and you control the game, you have to kill the game. This is a lesson we have to learn today.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I’m not a football manager, but you could see that Spurs were going nowhere in the 60th minute and Wolves were growing into the game.

With Moura, Richarlison, and Danjuma on the bench, a couple of them should have been on far earlier. What can they do with such short cameos?
