Cristian Stellini provides update on Antonio Conte ahead of Chelsea match

Cristian Stellini has provided an update on his contact with Antonio Conte and whether the head coach would return for this weekend’s fixture against Chelsea.

Conte had missed the match against Manchester City after undergoing surgery to remove his gall bladder earlier this month and will also miss Sunday’s Premier League clash against his former side.

The 53-year-old returned to the dugout for the defeat to Leicester City and was also present for the first leg of their Champions League last 16 clash against AC Milan.

Conte, however, had a checkup in Italy the day after the defeat at the San Siro and it was confirmed that he would remain at his family home to aid his recovery.

The head coach took to Instagram story to state that he had ‘underestimated’ the procedure and that his body had ‘suffered’ from his decision to return to the club too quickly.

He said: “My great sense of responsibility towards the club, the players, the staff and the fans brought about my comeback on field.

“Sadly I underestimated the procedure, which wasn’t a routine operation but a sudden and serious emergency. My body has suffered my impatience, and now I am forced to stop until my entire recovery.

“Anyone who knows me understands what a burden this is for me, but it is necessary. Come on you Spurs.”

Stellini confirmed that Conte would not be at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend, he told Football.London: No, I don’t think so. It’s not the moment. It’s very close though because I can feel his energy.

“We have a call 3-4 times a day and in the evening.”
