‘Criticise him all you want’ – Pundit defends ‘reliable’ 28-year-old Spurs star

Tim Sherwood has claimed that, despite the criticism he has received over the years, Eric Dier is one of Tottenham’s most reliable performers.

Dier’s form since the start of last season has been exemplary and the 28-year-old has been an ever-present in the centre of Tottenham’s backline since Antonio Conte arrived at the club.

Reports indicate that the Tottenham man is on the verge of being recalled to the England squad after almost two years (Daily Mail) and no one can argue that a return would not be richly deserved for the former Sporting Lisbon man.

Last week, Antonio Conte said that Dier is becoming one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and praised the defender’s desire to keep improving (Football.London).

Sherwood has now pointed out that despite how Dier is perceived by some, all of the managers that Tottenham have had over the past few years have continued to pick him.

The pundit told talkSPORT: “Eric’s a good lad. Everyone who goes to the football club, you see different managers there, they always play Eric Dier.

“You can criticise him all you want, but he is always in the team. He is a reliable campaigner. You know what you are going to get and it’s an honest performance from Eric Dier.”

Eric’s leadership qualities, his reading of the game and his calmness of the ball, make him a perfect fit to play as the central sweeper.

He is arguably the only player in the squad that we do not have a natural replacement for. If Conte does want to rest the 28-year-old, I suspect he will play Lenglet in the middle and Davies at left centre-back.
