Daniel Levy makes big announcement regarding Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Tottenham have announced that the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has received approval for licensed safe standing in seated areas from the start of 2022.

Safe standing has not been allowed in stadiums in the UK for over thirty years following the Hillsborough tragedy back in 1989.

However, fans across the country have been campaigning for the reintroduction of safe standing over recent years.

Two months ago, the UK government approved a trial on safe standing on various grounds, with Spurs among the clubs expected to be part of the trail.

Tottenham have now confirmed that the club’s 62,850-capacity ground has received approval to allow licensed safe standing from January 1, 2022.

It was revealed that the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been selected following an application process led by the Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA).

Apart from Spurs, Cardiff City, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United have also been approved for licensed safe standing at their respective home grounds.

Research will now be carried out at the five grounds by CFE Research and the findings will inform the government about the potential wider roll-out of licensed standing from the start of next season.

In the announcement, Daniel Levy said: “The Club has led on lobbying the Government for safe standing at stadia and is delighted that this will now be possible.

“It delivers choice for fans attending the game – whether home or away supporters – and the vast majority of our fans are in favour of this scheme.

“We are extremely proud of our ‘safe seating’ design, which ensures both comfort and safety, whether standing or seated, while maintaining the same aesthetics as in all other areas of the stadium.”

This is very good news for fans and the atmosphere is sure to improve considerably once safe standing is permitted in the South Stand. Tottenham also deserve credit for anticipating this legislative change and future-proofing the stadium for safe-standing.
