Danny Mills insists Liverpool player is the ‘obvious replacement’ for Vertonghen

Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills believes Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren is the ideal player for Spurs to replace Jan Vertonghen with.

Vertonghen’s contract with the club runs out in the summer and there has been no indication from either the club or the defender that he is going to sign an extension.

Jose Mourinho’s has reportedly prioritised rebuilding Tottenham’s defence when the transfer window reopens in the summer (the Express).

Tottenham have been linked with a move for Lovren after the 30-year-old found himself falling down the pecking order at Anfield this season and is said to be seeking a move away from the Premier League champions-elect (La Lazio Siamo Noi).

Some Spurs fans were horrified by the prospect of the club signing the Croatian international but Mills believes he is an obvious candidate for the Lilywhties to go for if Vertonghen does indeed depart North London.

Speaking about Lovren, Mills told Football Insider: “He is the self-professed greatest centre-half in the world. There seems to be a shortage of defenders out there at the moment.

“He has slipped down the pecking order at Liverpool and there will now be teams looking to snap him up. He is still a good player. Although he has quality he does make a mistake from time to time.

“There will be Premier League teams high up the table that are looking at his services. He would be an obvious replacement for Jan Vertonghen were he to leave Spurs this summer.”

Lovern does have a mistake or two in him, and given the fact that most of our goals recent have come from defensive errors, he is the last option we must be looking at. I would personally rather hand Vertonghen a one-year extension than bring the Liverpool to Spurs. I believe we need to spend big on a top defender like Dayot Upamecano.
