Darren Anderton believes Spurs should sign ‘different class’ transfer target

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has previously said that the club needs to undergo a painful rebuild, which indicates that there is likely to be a lot of player turnover at Tottenham this summer (Standard).

Spurs have been liked with a whole host of player from across Europe over the past few weeks. Former Spurs midfielder Darren Anderton has picked the one player who he feels is a class above the rest of which the North London club have been linked with – Ajax’s Donny Van de Beek.

He came through the academy at Ajax and has particularly shone in this campaign, making over 50 appearances in all competitions and putting in impressive performances against the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus.

The midfielder, who scored in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Tottenham is said to be interesting Spurs this summer (The Mirror), and Anderton has implored the club to sign him over Youri Tielemans who Spurs have also been linked with (Sky Sports).

Speaking to SportingBet, the 47-year-old said, “Tielemans had a good half season at Leicester but Tottenham should look to sign Ajax’s Van de Beek over the Belgian. He was excellent in both legs against Tottenham and would be a great signing for the club.

“He’s a different class to the other players Tottenham have been linked with and the one I think they need to sign ahead of anyone else.”

Van de Beek would be a fantastic signing for Spurs and would fit the club’s mantra of signing young players with potential, in a similar manner when we also signed Christian Eriksen from Ajax.

Ironically, the young Dutchman could help to fill a void if Eriksen does decide to leave Spurs this summer.
