Darren Bent believes that 28-year-old has been treated harshly by Mourinho

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker, Darren Bent, has continued to beat the drum about Erik Lamela’s positive attributes this week and believes that the Argentine has been treated harshly by Jose Mourinho.

Bent raved about Lamela’s performance in Tottenham’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United three weeks ago. The 28-year-old started in the number 10 role against the Red Devils and put in a typically tenacious display.

However, he found himself on the bench against both West Ham and Sheffield United since then and has been restricted to brief second-half cameos in both games.

Lamela played a crucial role in helping Spurs to win the ball back and set off the counter-attack that led to Harry Kane’s strike in Tottenham’s 2-0 win over West Ham.

The former Roma man was again one of Spurs’ most dangerous players at Bramall Lane when he came on in the second half, although some of his decision-making in the final third let him down.

Bent believes that the midfielder deserves to be playing more than he has been under the Special One.

The former England striker told Football Insider: “Listen, every time he (Lamela) comes in he always seems to give a very, very good account of himself.

“I thought he played very, very well against Manchester United in the first game, he was one of their best players and then for the next game he found himself on the bench, which I thought was a little bit harsh.

“He’s done really well but it’s difficult for Spurs and their fans at the moment.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Few plays have polarised Spurs fans as much as Erik Lamela has since he arrived at the club. I am firmly in the pro-Lamela group and it is evident from the way Jose Mourinho talks about the Argentine that he is too. Even if the 28-year-old is not a regular starter for us, he is a fantastic squad option to have around.
