Darren Bent claims Erik Lamela should be dropped after goal and assist against City

Tottenham Hotspur didn’t have too many standout players against Man City last weekend in what was essentially a pretty poor performance.

However, Erik Lamela has to be worth a special mention after the Argentine recorded a goal and an assist in the 2-2 draw.

After Spurs went 1-0 down to a Sterling header in the first half, it did feel as if the game could quickly get away from them.

However, just four minutes after conceding, Lamela drove at the Man City defence and wrong-footed Ederson in goal to find the back of the net.

After Tottenham had gone a goal down yet again, Lamela then produced the pin-point whipped corner that Lucas Moura happily headed home.

Despite being involved in Tottenham’s best two moments of the match, Darren Bent believes that Son will go straight back into the starting XI to replace the Argentine.

Son has become one of Tottenham’s biggest goal threats in recent seasons, especially in the Champions League run last year.

Bent said (Football Insider): “Listen, he’s (Lamela) done well, he’s scored a good goal and contributed to them getting a point but you’d like to think now Heung-min Son’s back from suspension, he goes straight back in.

“He’s one player Spurs do miss, you saw in the Champions League last season against Manchester City, he does it in these big games. The moment he comes back, I’m sure he’s ready to go, he goes straight back into that team.”

  1. I actually disagree, Son and Lamela are both big game players, but both are very different. I think both should alternate starting and finishing out games rather than having one over the other. I actually think Lamela intelligence is more effective early in games where son’s ambi-dexterity and pace are more effective when teams are tiring.

We may lose Eriksen this year and have just added Lo Celso, which changes the whole dynamic of our starting line ups. Where Son, Alli and Eriksen have been excellent although short of the best in trophy races, a line up of Son, Alli and say Lucas is not creative enough behind Kane for a team with any ambition of winning anything. Its is also a very big ask of Lo Celso to come in and replace Eriksen, the best playmaker of the last 6 years in the premier league.

Its entirely possible that our best starting line up changes to Ndombele, Winks and Lo Celso in midfield with Lamela, Son and Kane Up front. Lamela needs to feature more if we are to push for titles, that much is certain, with less of these 5 and 10 minute cameos of last season.

  2. Lamela is a liability unfortunately. You saw what he did in the dying seconds against Ajax, and countless other brain fart scenarios to mention. Son has to go straight back in. I feel more for Lucas, he tries his heart out every time, and keeps getting overlooked for a starting role. I’m stumped on that one. I see a front three of Moura ( Right ) Kane ( Centre ) and Son (left ) the only gripe I have with that is that Son underperforms when he plays alongside Kane. Son could easily be a Number 10 no doubt.
