Darren Bent claims Spurs should have pushed to sign £25m striker this summer

Darren Bent has claimed that Tottenham should have pushed through with a move to sign Danny Ings this summer.

The 29-year-old has appeared on Spurs’ radar on occasions before, but a potential move has never progressed beyond talks.

He was said to be a target for the North London club again this summer but made a relatively covert move to Aston Villa instead.

Ings set back Dean Smith’s side around £25 million after Southampton agreed to sell the English striker with less than a year left of his contract.

Spurs had been tracking Ings’ status on the South Coast amid the uncertainty surrounding Harry Kane, who at the time had been under intense speculation with a move to Manchester City.

Ultimately, the England captain didn’t achieve his move to Pep Guardiola’s side and Spurs seemingly relaxed their chase for another striker.

However, former Premier League striker Bent believes Spurs ‘missed a trick’ regarding Ings, and should have intensified talks with Southampton as soon as Kane’s future was uncertain.

He told talkSPORT: “I genuinely believe that Spurs missed a trick on Danny Ings. If he wanted to leave, you sell him, get Danny Ings early.

“You can’t tell me that Ings couldn’t score 15 or 20 goals in this team if he stays fit and that buys you a bit of time after Kane, as you have a proven Premier League goalscorer sitting right there.”

Ings would have been yet another option for Spurs, and a good one at that given his record against the top sides in England.

But Spurs haven’t dabbled too much with formations consisting of two strikers, and typically like to use wingers, which would’ve put a question mark regarding Ings’ overall use.
