Darren Bent insists Spurs winger needs ‘a run of games’ to produce his best

Darren Bent has urged Jose Mourinho to show faith in Steven Bergwijn and give the winger a run of games so that he can show his quality.

Jose Mourinho was extremely critical of the players who started Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat to Royal Antwerp in midweek, insisting he would have made eleven changes at half-time if he could have (Football.London).

Most of the focus since the defeat has been on Dele Alli, with some Spurs fans fearing that they have seen the last of the midfielder in a Tottenham shirt after he was hauled off by Mourinho at half-time.

However, Bergwijn was another player who was taken off after an extremely lacklustre performance.

The Dutchman made an immediate impact after arriving at Spurs back in January but has been in and out of the side this season after Tottenham’s attack was bolstered by the arrival of Gareth Bale and Carlos Vinicius (transfermarkt.com) and was left out of the squad which beat Brighton 2-1 last night.

Bent believes that Bergwijn is worth persisting with and insisted it was impossible for the former PSV Eindhoven man to show his quality if he does not get a consistent run in the side.

The former Spurs striker told Football Insider: “He’s (Begwijn) still got the speed so it comes down to consistency and game time.

“If he played 10 games in a row, we’d see the best of Bergwijn.

“When he first came over and he hit the ground running with that great finish against Manchester City he was playing at PSV week in, week out.

“When you’re a bit-part player like he is at the minute, you never ever going to see the true Steven Bergwijn.

“What they need to do is give him a run of games because at the minute the only ones we see get a run of games are Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son and that’s why we see the very best of them.

“Especially for an attacking player as well, you’ve got to find your feet. How do you expect to see the best of him?”
