Darren Bent on why top a four finish is in still Spurs’ hands ahead of Arsenal and Man Utd

Darren Bent still believes that Tottenham Hotspur are in pole position to finish fourth in the Premier League table this season despite their surprise defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Antonio Conte’s side failed to get out of the blocks at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against the Seagulls and were punished in the final minute of the match when Leandro Trossard prodded the ball beyond Hugo Lloris.

Tottenham failed to register a single shot on target in what was a performance devoid of any creativity with Brighton being good value for their victory.

Bent is confident his former side can go on another good run of form during the final six matches of the campaign and believes the fate of who will finish fourth is in Spurs’ hands given Manchester United’s inconsistency and Arsenal’s struggles in front of goal.

Speaking to Premier League Productions after the match, Bent said: “With Antonio Conte they have been on a great run, Tottenham and I expect them to do that again. Because what is it, one loss in their last five? So they can go on a run and as you said, they’re already in fourth spot.

“It’s in their hands at the end of the day. If they can win their games, then I think with the consistency that’s going around them with Manchester United being inconsistent and Arsenal not scoring any goals, I still think it’s in Spurs’ hands.”

Frustratingly, Spurs’ failure to beat Brighton has seen a missed opportunity to put further distance between themselves and north London rivals Arsenal after they lost at Southampton.

Spurs come up against an in-form Brentford next weekend and need to show a significant improvement in creating opportunities or could risk a disastrous end to the season.
