Darren Bent singles out midfielder who would be a great signing for Spurs

Darren Bent has claimed that Marcel Sabitzer would be a shrewd signing for Tottenham Hotspur.

The RB Leipzig midfielder showed his quality on Tuesday night when he scored twice during the first half in their win against Spurs.

Sabitzer’s brace helped the German side to a 3-0 victory on the night to complete a comfortable 4-0 aggregate win to end Tottenham’s Champions League journey at the round of 16 stage.

The 25-year-old’s brace took his tally for the season to 15 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions for Leipzig and has also provided eight assists (transfermarkt).

The Sun have reported earlier this week that Tottenham are keen on the Austrian international, who has also caught the eye of North London rivals Arsenal.

Sabitzer had never scored in the Champions League knockout stages prior to the visit of Spurs to the Red Bull Arena.

Bent told Football Insider: “We certainly got a glimpse of it [Sabitzer’s talent] first hand the other night.

“He was very, very good. He completely bossed the game, scored two goals.

“He’s definitely someone I’d be looking at thinking ‘you know what, he could certainly do a job’.

“What they’ve not got in the middle of the park, Spurs, is somebody who can really go on and get a goal from centre midfield. That’s costing them a little bit.

“For me, a great signing he would be if they could get it, but after the season that this young man has had, it’s not going to surprise me if there are a lot of teams in for him.”

Opinion

Whether Spurs could persuade Sabitzer to make the move remains to be seen with Leipzig on course to qualify for the Champions League once more next season whilst Spurs find themselves in eighth place in the Premier League table.
