Darren Bent urges Spurs to beat West Ham to highly-rated defender

Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent has urged the club to beat West Ham United to the signing of Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who has been linked with a move to the Premier League.

The 28-year-old has been one of the most consistent centre-halves in the Serie A for the past few years and established a reputation as one of the most sought after defenders in world football.

The Daily Express reported a few days ago that West Ham were attempting an audacious move for the Napoli defender and were prepared to pay £70m to sign him this month. El Desmarque also reported that Spurs were in talks with Napoli over a move.

Bent insisted that Spurs could lure Koulibaly to North London as they had more to offer in comparison to the Hammers.

Speaking to Drive on TalkSport (06/01/2020 at 4:25 pm), the former Spurs striker said, “They talk about West Ham going in for Koulibaly, surely they (Tottenham) can get in there before.

“They are in the Champions League, they are doing better in the Premier League, so surely they can go and get Koulibaly and get him over West Ham.”

He also suggested Southampton striker Danny Ings as a possible target for the Lilywhites this month. Bent added, “I understand, Danny Ings is on fire.

“They should be, not breaking the bank, but putting a package together where Southampton cannot refuse it and then he can go there and score goals for Spurs.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Koulibaly with his vast experience and combative ability will be a perfect foil for Alderweireld and at this point, it is clear that he will be an upgrade over Vertonghen who seems past his best. However, with the amount of interst in the Napoli defender, I fear he might be out of Tottenham’s price range.
