Darren Bent urges Spurs to go for £45m-rated target’s team-mate

Responding to Tottenham Hotspur’s reported interest in Marcel Sabitzer, Darren Bent has urged the North Londoners to instead go after his RB Leipzig teammate Dayot Upamecano.

Julian Nagelsmann’s players have done their respective reputations no harm during the Bundesliga side’s impressive run in the Champions League which included victories over the likes of Spurs and Atletico Madrid.

Sabitzer was one of those who stood out for the German outfit who eventually came up short at the semi final stage against PSG.

Tottenham are reportedly looking to beat several European clubs to the Austrian international’s signature this summer.

Reports indicate that Leipzig would demand around £45million in order to sell the midfielder this summer (BILD).

While Bent believes that Sabitzer could prove a decent addition for Jose Mourinho’s side, he insisted that they needed Upamecano more.

The centre-half has also previously been mentioned as a target for the Lilywhites (Don Balon) but Leipzig confirmed earlier this month that he had extended his contract until 2023.

When asked about Spurs’ interest in Sabitzer, the 36-year-old told talkSPORT (16/08/20 at 2:50 pm): “I think he would be a very good signing.

“I do believe that people are looking at the wrong RB Leipzig player because we have spoken about their centre-half [Upamecano]. What a performance he put on the other night.

“I think people need to be looking at him. But as far as the midfield player goes, I think he would suit Spurs down to the ground. I think he’s an upgrade [on Harry Winks].

“You look at Spurs, they have just got Hojbjerg in and they are talking about this midfielder here. When are they going to start addressing the back end [of the pitch]?”

Spurs Web Opinion

It seems like Upamecano is staying put at Leipzig for another season after signing his contract extension. Even if he were available, I doubt we would be in a position to afford him. I agree with Bent that Sabitzer is not really a player we are desperate for, given the other attacking midfield options we have at our disposal. However, I would not be surprised if we were to sell Lamela this summer if we receive the right offer for him.
