The Daily Mirror are reporting that Harry Redknapp will sign David James on a free transfer this summer.

The England goalkeeper worked with Redknapp during their time together at Portsmouth and James is expected to depart following their relegation to the Championship.

Heurelho Gomes is established as Tottenham’s No.1, but Redknapp is said to want some stiff competition to keep the Brazilian at his best.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy refused to make a previous move for James, but could reconsider a free transfer deal.

  1. On a free transfer and sensible wages,he would be a good back up keeper and give Gomes competition. This could be a win win situation for Spurs,he brings a lot of experience and seems to work well with Harry. This will save money on a transfer fee wich can be used to buy the big superstar signing we keep hearing about

  2. We do need a good backup keeper Ben needs more time to mature and Gomes needs a strong competitor to keep him sharp. Providing we do not sell Gomes after James arrives I think it' a good move

  3. Would take him all day on a free. Just as long as he knows he will be No2. Don’t rock the boat with gomes harry he is the best keeper in the prem by far.

  4. Pleasegodnoooooooooo!

He's always been terrible at the Lane and I'm desperately hoping this is just lazy journalism.

I'd agree that The Octopuss needs strong competition but not a 40 year old joke. Go for a younger guy, train him alongside Gomes/play minor cup games for six years then let him take over.

I can offer no names – but it ain't my job to identify players.

Come On You (England squad) Spurs!

  5. i think on a free transfer and on resonable wages you cant go wrong, but james is not getting any younger so is this deal worth it because we just have to replace when hes finished. weve recently been linked with watford GK Scott Loach who is one for the future but we also have a chance to gets ex-manchester city GK Kasper Sheimcal on a free transfer, he i young and wont mind being second contention to Gomes.
    what do u think

  6. Might be a wise move, one area we do lack experience in as a good back up to Gomes. Bearing in mind we may have a tough long season ahead with CL if we qualify. James wont have massive expectations, probably glad he is with a club such as us, costs nothing to buy. I am all for the cautious approach with spending this summer, we dont need massive wholsale changes, perhaps a few out and a couple of real quality players in to enhance the team.

  7. YOU HAVE TO WATCH JAMES VERY CAREFULLY HARRY HE IS STILL THE KIND OF GUY WHO WON`T SETTLE FOR A SEAT ON THE BENCH OR EVEN TRY TO BLUFF HIM INTO A SENSE OF FALSE SECURITY HE WILL BE OFF LIKE A GREYHOUND , IF HE STARTS HIS NONSENSE TRYING TO PLAY MIND GAMES WITH GOMES WE COULD END UP WITH THE KEEPER WE FIRST STARTED OFF WITH AT THE BEGINING OF THE SEASON A BIG BAG OF NERVES .
